Big Sky Country and Tribal Governance
Montana is home to seven Indian reservations and the state-recognized Little Shell Tribe of Chippewa Indians. There is a total of twelve tribal nations that are either federally or state recognized in Montana. The seven federally recognized tribal nations have been granted tribal sovereignty, which means they have the authority to govern themselves, with some limitations. There is great diversity among the twelve tribes located in Big Sky Country in their languages, rituals, histories and governments. Each tribe has a distinct and unique cultural heritage that contributes to modern Montana, with rich and time-honored traditions and customs that have been passed down from generation to generation.
Tribal members and reservation residents are encouraged to contact tribal governments.
